Assassin's Creed Valhalla: PC Specs You Need To Hit 1080p/60

In many ways, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a game of “firsts.” From a story perspective, it gives the player easily-digestible 2 to 3 hour chunks of narrative — a smart decision given how many games will compete for our time this holiday season. On the technological side of things, it’s the first Assassin’s Creed entry to employ DirectX 12. And Ubisoft is going out of its way to reassure PC gamers that the end result is a PC experience better than ever.

The Valhalla team released the expected PC requirements, but also a companion video which details the various improvements and optimizations coming to the PC version of the game.

“Using DX12 has allowed the team to improve overall performance and stability,” Ubisoft says in the video (embedded below). “One of the main improvements and key focuses was on scalability, to ensure as many people as possible could play comfortably.”

If you want to skip straight to the hardware requirements for various performance tiers, just scroll down to the bottom of this post. But the geek in me needs to highlight some of what makes this PC version special.

In no particular order:

  • There’s no FPS cap
  • More than 120 settings you can tweak and customize.
  • Multi-monitor display support
  • “Hybrid Input” support (use your own custom combo of controller, keyboard and mouse)
  • Detailed in-game benchmark with performance analysis

Ubisoft’s video above goes into more detail on each of those bullet points, and hopefully it’s more than marketing fluff. Past versions of Assassin’s Creed PC ports have struggled even on monster hardware, so I’m looking forward to flexing that benchmark tool across several different CPU and GPU configurations.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla would undoubtedly benefit from Nvidia’s DLSS technology which uses machine learning to improve image quality and performance. However, Ubisoft is partnered with AMD on this title, which means Radeon owners get FidelityFX. It has the benefit of being open source, but can’t quite match what Nvidia has managed to do with its competing feature.

Onto the PC specs. This is probably what you’re here for so let’s get to it.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: PC Specs You Need To Hit 1080p/60

Ubisoft says the minimum requirements to achieve 1080p / 30 FPS on AC Valhalla are an AMD R9 380 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 960, paired with 8GB of RAM and either an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel i5-4460 CPU. Modest requirements, but also low graphics quality.

It’s when we hit the “High” spec that a touch of concern enters the picture. A GTX 1080 being required to hit 1080p / 60 FPS on High quality settings? Hmm.

I just benchmarked my Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming card across 10 different titles and with the exception of Metro Exodus, it consistently delivered 60+ FPS on maxed out graphics settings.

So what will 4K gamers want? Reaching all the way to the Ultra spectrum, players who want 4K / 30 FPS on the Ultra quality preset will need an AMD RX 5700XT or Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics card paired with 16GB of RAM and an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel i7-9700K CPU.

Ubisoft recommends an SSD with 50GB of free space across the board.

If the chart happens to be too small to view comfortable on your browser, here’s how it all breaks down:
